Get to know each contestant in the eye's of her roommate! We've asked each contestant to interview her roommate... this is what she had to say:
Picture

As Presented by Miss St. Croix Valley - Kailee Ogden

What is your platform and why did you choose it?

Inspired by the experiences I had growing up in a multi-cultural family, my personal platform, titled "Believe We Are One: Creating Global Citizens," is focused on equipping individuals with the skills they need to become Global Citizens and help make the world a more just and sustainable place. To put it simply, Believe We Are One is a movement that says ‘the human community is one community, and we succeed and fail together.’

The motivation I find through my family as well as my personal vision for meeting the needs of our broken world are embedded in everything I do. From my personal hobbies to my professional goals, I am continuously driven by a fundamental passion for people. Carrying the inspiration I have from my 'global' family, this passion has led me and my advocacy all over the world. The takeaway for each person I work with is this: “Despite the world’s complexity, I have the ability to use my power in my corner of the globe to make it a safe and thriving place for all.”

What is your favorite post pageant snack?

Peanut butter and dark chocolate!

What is your talent? How long have you been doing that?

My talent is Jazz Tap; I started taking lessons when I was three years old.

What are you most looking forward to at the Miss Minnesota pageant?

I truly believe that it is the people you meet and the connections you make that shape any opportunity into a life-changing experience. Whether it's doing a puzzle with a child at the Children's Hospital or laughing with my roommate at night (cannot wait, Kailee!), the moments of shared experience that I will carry on as memories are the ones that I look forward to the most!

What is one crazy thing I should expect as your roommate?

I love workout videos and, just for fun, will be packing some Jane Fonda style leg warmers along with my Insanity DVDs!

Picture

As Presented by Miss Waseca County Sleigh & Cutter - Drew Trahms

What is your platform and why did you choose it?

My platform is "Change Their Story: Combating Domestic Violence with Economic Empowerment." One in four women will experience domestic violence during her lifetime, and the number one reason women can't leave or return to an abusive relationship is they don't have the financial resources needed to break free. As a victim myself, these resources gave me the freedom to leave, and I believe all survivors should be empowered to do the same. My platform is about partnering with shelters to bring financial literacy and career empowerment training to survivors across the state of Minnesota so that they, too, can change their story.

What is your favorite post pageant snack?

Definitely cheesecake!

What is your talent? How long have you been doing that?

My talent is piano performance; I started taking lessons in the second grade.

What are you most looking forward to at the Miss Minnesota pageant?

Some of my best friends I've met as a result of competing in the MAO, and I look forward to the deep connections and friendships that form every year during Miss Minnesota week! I'm so looking forward to sharing a room with you, Drew!

What is one crazy thing I should expect as your roommate?

I have funny night gowns for every night of competition. My mom just picked up a pink one with a moose on the front wearing a crown and sash that reads. "Moose America!"

Presented by Miss Frazee - Mollee Byer

Meet my Miss Minnesota roommate, Miss Thief River Falls, Brianna Drevlow!

Brianna recently graduated from Concordia College with a Bachelor of Music major in Composition and Music Theory along with a minor in Piano Performance. She plans to continue on with school pursuing her Masters in Composition.

Brianna studied classical piano for seventeen years and was also a member of the Concordia orchestra. As her talent, she will be performing a classical piano piece. Maybe she can teach me a thing or two while we have spare time!

Brianna is very active in her platform, 'Brenna's Brigade: Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis Awareness'. A fun fact about her is that she has 10 siblings! I cannot wait to meet all of them during Miss Minnesota week!

I am so excited that I get to grow closer to Brianna in the weeks to come and I know we will remain friends because of the Miss America Organization!

We've asked each contestant to interview her roommate... Miss Southwest has a room to herself, so she interviewed our wonderful hostesses.

Miss Southwest - Melissa Paakh

PictureJacquie Jenkins and Karla Boettcher
Since I have a room to myself during Miss Minnesota week, I do not have a roommate to interview. I did however, have the pleasure of interviewing our lovely back stage hostesses, Karla Boettcher and Jacquie Jenkins. These two ladies have the impressive task of assisting all contestants during Miss MN week. From creating duct tape bras to dealing with fire alarms, these ladies have seen and done it all!

I set up a conference call with the pair and was surprised to learn the two have an interesting history. They met through work, and if it wasn't work that was going to bring them together, something else would have.

Melissa: What is the one thing the Miss Minnesota Class of 2016 should know about you?

Karla: Well they should know how we met. We are both nurses. While I was working in Owatana in a contract,  Jacquie started working in the same role. Before we had even met, our bosses didn't think we were going to get along and were concerned. They thought our personalities were going to clash, so they sent us off to a supervisor training class to work things out. We've been best friends since. We also have the same middle name, (Kaye) and both of our Mom's name is Dorris. We both have two kids, a boy and a girl.

Jacquie: And her birthday is on my ex husband's birthday and my birthday is on Karla's ex husband's birthday. One of us is left brained and one is right brained so we seem to make up for each other. I always have the right side and Karla always has the left side so we compliment each other- but we do this unconsciously.  We even sleep that way in hotel rooms!
Karla: It's true- we were meant for each other.

Jacquie: Although my mother likes her better than me. (laughs)

We started to chat about the Miss Minnesota competition, and they explained that since there are two separate dressing rooms, Jacquie takes one and Karla takes one. I found out that they have a "dressing room competition" for who will have the new Miss Minnesota in their dressing room. Fun fact: Two of the last 3 Miss Minnesota's have sat in the same chair in the same dressing room.

Melissa: What is the craziest thing that has happened backstage?

Karla: The fastest wardrobe change ever was accomplished by Siri Freeh. There were 4 of us that all had one job. One person pulled off the old dress, one person did the shoes, etc. Siri was on stage, off stage, and then back on stage in a new dress in about 2 minutes.

Jacquie: Last year I made an awesome duct tape bra. One of the contestants didn't have a bra for her dress, so I made a bra out of duct tape for her, two nights in a row.

(I know, these ladies are impressive!)

Melissa: What is one piece of advice would you give to the contestants?

Karla: Don't look at what your neighbor is doing, what they are wearing, or how they are doing their make up. Usually that is a mistake because girls will start to questions themselves and if what they are doing is right. Girls do much better when they stay true to themselves.

Jacquie: I agree.  Laugh if you need to, cry if you need to, and what ever happens there is a reason for it, and you just keep going.

Melissa: Of everything that has happened during Miss MN week, what is one thing you will never forget?

Karla: One year, they wanted to have a smoke effect for the show, but during rehearsal it set off all the fire alarms. There was a contestant that had asthma and the haze really bothered her, so she had to go outside. Ultimately they decided not use them.

Jacquie: Last year it was very warm outside. A couple contestants asked if they could go outside and sit on the grass, so I thought sure why not? Well they both fell asleep laying outside. The judges chair came inside and said that girls were sleeping on the lawn so we had to bring them back inside.

Karla: Jacquie can't be trusted with the girls! (laughing) One time she left two girls at the hotel when we were supposed to be going somewhere, but luckily the Yehs (parents of Miss Minnesota that year) were still at the hotel and were able to bring them.

After finishing our conversation, I have to say that after hearing the crazy stories from this fun-loving duo, I am even more excited for Miss Minnesota week. Hopefully this year there won't be a need for fire alarms or duct tape bras- but if there's one thing that Jacquie and Karla taught me, the week is unpredictable, and the best way to go about it is to be yourself, and laugh along the way.

Presented by Miss Winona - Brittany Moncrief

Kamaria Braye, Miss Great Lakes, is a 23 year old from Minneapolis, Minnesota. She is a first year titleholder! Her platform is Operation R.E.A.D, which stands for Read, enjoy, and discover. Her platform is to help improve academic success of children, and to teach them that reading is fun! Why did she pick this? Because she’s a reading tutor for lower income families, so it’s a subject that’s certainly applicable in her life.

She picked this, because she knows that her students fall low in grade level reading, and because of this, it results in them not liking reading. She was inspired to help them, and make a change in their lives.

Some fun facts about Kamaria? She played tennis in high school and college, she was Queen for Miss Lincoln University, and she studied Journalism!

What can I expect from rooming with you? Lots of girl bonding, talking a lot, being really excited, but nervous, and a ton of positive vibes!

Favorite snacks/drink- Oceanspray Cranberry Juice

I'm so excited to introduce my roomie Abby Ulyott, Miss Heart of the Lakes! Abby's platform is, Be Water Safe NOT Sorry. She focuses on both education and providing access to the necessary equipment to be water safe. She has been a life guard and swimming lessons instructor for 3 years and she was amazed of the amount of people that didn't know basic water safety procedures!

She danced for 11 years, when she went into high school she decided to stop so that she could focus more on school. Luckily, for her MAO allows her to still express herself artistically!

Meet my Miss Minnesota roommate, Mollee Byer, Miss Frazee!

Her platform involves the American Cancer Society, and she is very active with the Becker County and East Otter Tail County organizations. She enjoys speaking to classrooms and civic organizations and loves showing her spirit at the Relay for Life events!

Mollee is a talented dancer and has been involved with both her high school varsity dance team and the Northern Lights Dance Academy as well as the Hip Hop Team at NDSU. I can’t wait to have dance parties with her before bedtime during our week together!

She also has a little bit of a sweet tooth, as her favorite pageant snacks are Mountain Dew and chocolate, and we both had a chance to bond over Mongolian food, something we both enjoy. :)

Mollee looks forward to both gaining the experience of competing for Miss Minnesota and bonding with the other contestants. She is a fun, energetic, and I know rooming with her at Miss Minnesota will be a joy!

Get to know each contestant in the eye's of her roommate! We've asked each contestant to interview her roommate... this is what she had to say:
Picture

Presented by Miss Granite City - Allyson Helms

I had the incredible opportunity to meet Molly West and interview her. She will be my roommate at Miss Minnesota and I am beyond ecstatic to room with her! Last year, she was the teen queen of the woman who crowned me so I got to know just a little bit about her. Now, I can't wait to get to know her even better. Here's a little bit about Molly!

Molly's platform is The ABC's of a Bully Free School which is all about helping today's youth over come bullying in schools. She has spoken to over 500 students about her platform over the past four years. Every year she goes back to the same schools to talk to a different grade but, inevitably, the teachers hear that she is there and invite her into their classrooms. Each year she ends up speaking to almost the entire school and kids from previous years remember her! That's how she knows she is making a difference. Additionally, she hopes to continue the message of our reigning Miss Minnesota, Rachel Latuff, and her blue pinky campaign!

Her talent will be a dance to So Cold by Nikiesha Reyes. She danced competitively from age 6-12, then quit to be in hockey. Although she stopped competing in dance, she never stopped dancing for fun. Performing in front of a stage is such an amazing feeling for her and she's excited to showcase her dance in front of the Miss Minnesota audience.

Molly has competed in the Miss America Organization since age 13 and has grown so much. She feels like she has become a young woman who is poised and can take on any challenge because of her experiences. While some people wonder why she kept competing even though she never won the state teen title, Molly says it's not just about the crown. She wants to make as big of a difference as a local titleholder and to continue learning about herself.

The crazy thing I need to expect about being her as my roommate is that she's never had a roommate before since she's the only contestant still in high school! While she's a bit intimidated coming into this as the only high schooler, she knows she is excited for the challenge! I can't wait to get to know Molly even better and continue to grow with all the incredible young women in our Miss Minnesota class!

Get to know each contestant in the eye's of her roommate! We've asked each contestant to interview her roommate... this is what she had to say:
Picture

Presented by Miss Moorhead - Brooke Critchley

What is your platform and why did you choose it?
My platform is called Dare2Dream, it's an organization I founded and started when I was 16. As a child I was abused by my father, and I was traveling down a very dark path. I was fortunate enough to have a teacher that set my path straight, and Dare2Dream sets out to unite youth in an effort to make them each other's beacon of light through dark times. We're now in 3 different states, and expanding rapidly!

What is your favorite post pageant snack?
I have always had an obsession with chicken nuggets, which just happen to be my post-pageant favorite (with a lot of sweet baby rays bbq).

What is your talent? How long have you been doing that?
My talent is vocal, and I have a passion for sharing my voice with others. My mom always jokes that I was born singing, so I guess I've been practicing for just about 21 years!

What are you most looking forward to at the Miss Minnesota pageant?
I am looking forward to making some incredible friends this year. One of the things I've learned trough pageantry is that you will make friends that remain sisters throughout your entire life, so knowing that I will have over two dozen new friends is extremely exciting.

What is one crazy thing I should expect as your roommate?
I tend to sleep talk! Most of the time it's just gibberish, but obviously my dreams are too big to remain quiet during sleep!
