Casey McCarraher, Miss Winona, is from New Vienna, IA. She is a junior at St. Mary’s University of Minnesota in Winona. Her major is Pastoral Youth Ministry. Her career goal is to get youth more involved in today’s society as a Youth Minister in a catholic parish. Casey is the daughter of Keith and Dee McCarraher and is the 4th of 7 children. Casey likes to read, play guitar, hike in the bluffs and sing. She has also been active in campus ministry.
At St. Mary’s, Casey is in the Concert and Chamber Choirs. With these choirs, Casey has traveled to and sung in England and California. Casey has chosen singing as her talent because singing has always been such a big part of Casey’s life.
Casey’s platform, “It’s Your Choice…Impaired Driving Awareness” stems from an accident her brother was involved in when he was 17 after he had been drinking. Casey has been using her platform to make a difference. “I don’t want anyone to go through what I went through, what my family and my community went through.”
During her time as Miss Winona, she has been working to get the message out about how to handle situations where someone may be on the verge of driving drunk. She believes that everyone, no matter who they are, can take steps to prevent drunk driving throughout the community. She would continue this work as Miss Minnesota.
Casey believes “It’s up to you to make the decision to not drive drunk, and it’s up to you to step up and step in when someone else is about to get in a car under the influence.”
In December 2017, the Honorable Mark Dayton signed a proclamation submitted by Casey that designated that month as Drunk and Drugged Driving Prevention Month in Minnesota.
