Social Impact: "Go Gold" For Pediatric Cancer
Kendra Sparby is a currently a junior at the University of Minnesota Duluth campus, pursuing a double major in Political Science and Psychology with a minor in Deaf Studies. She was recently honored to be the recipient of the UMD Gerald & Eleanor Heaney Scholarship, which is awarded to undergraduate pre-law students with merit. Kendra is presently preparing for her study abroad in China this summer, where she will be learning Mandarin at Shanghai University.
Kendra is actively involved in many campus activities and organizations. She is a member of the sisterhood of Alpha Tau Sigma, a sorority that promotes a women’s wellness initiative concentrating on wellness through service activities and projects. Kendra is a double gold medalist with the United States Figure Skating Association and continues to be involved in her sport by competing with the UMD Figure Skating Club, serving as the Intercollegiate Captain for the 2018-19 Season. Kendra also serves as the figure skating club’s Chief Clerical Officer to the UMD Sports Clubs Association. At UMD she is involved in Relay for Life, Love Your Melon and just recently made application to start a new organization called Childhood Cancer Awareness at UMD.
Kendra advocates for research and awareness of childhood cancer in memory of her best friend, Gracie Woods, who passed away from Osteogenic Sarcoma in 2015. She has raised funds and awareness through classroom education fundraisers and various community events. Kendra has raised over $5,000.00 for the Children’s Miracle Network and an additional $3,000.00 for cancer research. Kendra's efforts and fundraising resulted in her recognition as a Gold Ribbon Hero by the American Childhood Cancer Organization in 2017. Kendra also serves as an ambassador for the Zach Sobiech Cancer Research Fund.
