Miss Minnesota: Kindness is Not a Weakness

A week ago Sunday, I was not crowned Miss America. As it turns out, however, I received an award that I consider to be an honor personally, and maybe it will turn out to mean something to you, my Minnesota family, as well. I’m talking about the Miss Congeniality award. The one that is not televised, or given much hoopla, but is respected enough by the Miss America Organization to be accompanied by a $2,000 scholarship.

Don’t get me wrong. I know Miss Congeniality has a reputation. Kind of a bad rap, really, as the prize that goes to the “nice” girl — the one who has no chance of winning, and as such, is pretty much OK with everyone else. I think kindness is mistakenly seen as weakness, something that lacks pluck and ambition.

But kindness matters. Kindness matters because it is the one thing that brings us closer together as humans. It’s a choice we make in response to the needs of others, and also in response to the knowledge in ourselves that we need kindness, too. We seek connection, experience and community.

Kindness is not about weakness. It’s about strength. Kindness means acknowledging that difficult differences exist — in opinion, in race, in religion, in experience, in culture — and being able to see, as Maya Angelou so beautifully stated, that we are more alike than we are unalike. To act with kindness says “I see you as a part of my tribe. I see your need. I want to help” and that’s hard sometimes. But the hardest things are also the most fulfilling.

We live in a crazy, unpredictable world. These days more than ever, we have the opportunity to close off into our all-too-busy personal lives, to feel overwhelmed by the scope of our differences. It’s easy to look away, to look down at our phones, to ignore the call inside each of us because we are don’t know how to begin.

I am thankful to the Miss America Organization and to the 52 women whose lives touched mine. I am proud to be Miss Congeniality. I hope that we all can strive to be that person who responds to the world with an open gesture of kindness. It’s as simple as a smile, and the opportunities are endless.

Let’s begin here.

Miss Minnesota is Miss Congeniality

A big congratulations to our very own, Miss Minnesota! She didn't take home the crown at Miss America, but she won one of the most honorable titles... Miss Congeniality. All of the contestants vote for the girl who they believe is the friendliest, and we definitely agree Madeline is it!

Madeline is studying Political Science and Latin at the University of Minnesota, where she also interns for the Minnesota State Legislature. She is an advocate for the arts and arts education through her program, The Arts Project.

In the end, it was Miss Arkansas, Savvy Shields, who won the title of Miss America! She will promote healthy eating with her platform, Eat Better, Live Better. She performed a Jazz dance to “They Just Keep Moving The Line” from the American drama series, Smash. Learn more about Miss America here.

The Minnesota State Fair came to the veterans!

Miss Minnesota, Madeline Van Ert, visited our veterans and their families at the Minnesota Veteran's Home annual State Fair. There were baby farm animals and fair treats, including pork chops on a stick, cheese curds, roasted corn on the cob, ice cream, and more.  We truly appreciate all the sacrifices that our veteran’s have given for our country.
A great time was had by all!

Cali Weddle Reflects on Miss America's Outstanding Teen

8/10/2016

Comments

In looking back on my week at Miss America's Outstanding Teen, it is difficult to put my feelings into words. It was truly a once-in-a-lifetime, one-of-a-kind, incomparable experience. The 51 girls that came to compete may have had different stories and journeys that led us to our crowns, but we had one common factor among all of us: a passion for doing good and going above and beyond to better ourselves and our communities through our platform work. Seeing the way that these girls have all gone the extra mile to be set apart from what every other teenager in our generation calls "normal" was so inspiring to me and pushed me to live with even more passion for everything I do in my life. I made incredible friends that I know will stay by my side and support me in my journey as a state titleholder long after this week has passed. Sharing this bond of a commitment to excellence is truly something special. I may not have come home with the national crown, but that doesn't take away from the things I have already accomplished with my state title and will continue to do throughout my year.

So the real question... What's next?

Well first, a nap. Then, I am very excited to be able to focus on my platform work and work hands on with JDRF. In the next few months, I will get the chance to go into support groups for children with type 1 diabetes and their families to share my story and encourage them in their battle with the disease. I will also continue selling my demo CD to raise money for JDRF.

Finally, I am looking forward to seeing the MMOT Class of 2017 grow as more and more girls set out on this crazy journey that will mold and shape the into strong leaders. I can't wait to see the great things that are going to come out of these girls!!

xoxo,
Your Miss Minnesota's Outstanding Teen,
Cali Weddle

She's Off to Miss America's Outstanding Teen!

5 more days... I can't believe it! I knew the 6 weeks from MMOT to Miss America's Outstanding Teen were going to go fast, but it's still hard to believe it's here.

This weekend has been filled with fun as I get ready to leave on Friday. Yesterday, I went to the Miss Heart of the Lakes / Miss Perham pageant where I got the chance to sing the national anthem, perform my talent, talk about my platform and journey to nationals, and help with crowning. I was even able to sell some of my CDs to raise money for my platform which is always so rewarding. It was such a fun night and I loved getting to see some of my friends from MMOT week!

Now today is my send off party. I'm so excited to show my friends and family what I have been working on for the last month and a half! Not only will I get to show what I will be doing at the national pageant, but I will get to talk about my platform and the work I have been doing and will continue doing throughout my year of service. I'm so blessed to have the opportunity to talk with my friends and family about something that is so special to me and that I am truly passionate about. In the short time that I have been a state titleholder, I have already been humbled and honored by the overwhelming support that I have received from everyone in my life and today will be a continuation of that encouragement.

So here's to another great day and a quick and crazy 5 days until I am on a plane and headed to Orlando!! 😎
