In looking back on my week at Miss America's Outstanding Teen, it is difficult to put my feelings into words. It was truly a once-in-a-lifetime, one-of-a-kind, incomparable experience. The 51 girls that came to compete may have had different stories and journeys that led us to our crowns, but we had one common factor among all of us: a passion for doing good and going above and beyond to better ourselves and our communities through our platform work. Seeing the way that these girls have all gone the extra mile to be set apart from what every other teenager in our generation calls "normal" was so inspiring to me and pushed me to live with even more passion for everything I do in my life. I made incredible friends that I know will stay by my side and support me in my journey as a state titleholder long after this week has passed. Sharing this bond of a commitment to excellence is truly something special. I may not have come home with the national crown, but that doesn't take away from the things I have already accomplished with my state title and will continue to do throughout my year.
So the real question... What's next?
Well first, a nap. Then, I am very excited to be able to focus on my platform work and work hands on with JDRF. In the next few months, I will get the chance to go into support groups for children with type 1 diabetes and their families to share my story and encourage them in their battle with the disease. I will also continue selling my demo CD to raise money for JDRF.
Finally, I am looking forward to seeing the MMOT Class of 2017 grow as more and more girls set out on this crazy journey that will mold and shape the into strong leaders. I can't wait to see the great things that are going to come out of these girls!!
