Miss Monarch’s Teen Mackenzie Brady created The Hlín Project to help protect children from sex trafficking. Inspired by the Norse goddess Hlín, who protects innocent people from dangerous situations, Mackenzie’s goal is to see the human trafficking hotline in every public bathroom throughout Minnesota. This will help those who need a lifeline to escape from a desperate situation. She wants to meet with leaders to improve legislation in our state so that the crime of trafficking persons is ended. Her outreach to the community will help all of us recognize the signs of an enslaved person and advocate for resources to fight modern-day slavery.
Mackenzie’s involvement in her school's DECA program made her aware of this issue. In 2022, she held an event to fundraise for Operation Underground Railroad. She held a “Storytime with Santa” event, sold candy grams at school, and collected online donations. So far she has raised $865 and hopes to raise $2,000 throughout her year as Miss Monarch’s Outstanding Teen. A senior at Chanhassen High School, Mackenzie plans to major in experience design and management and minor in legal studies at Brigham Young University. She knows that skills built in the Miss America Organization (MAO) will help her achieve her dream of being an attorney. She has already used her confidence and public speaking skills as treasurer of her DECA chapter, service officer of her National Honor Society chapter, and president of her prom committee. When she was a camp counselor with the Chanhassen Parks and Recreation Department, she worked with youth to help them set goals and inspire positive interactions. Mackenzie enjoys playing the flute because of the way the sound is so joyful and calming. She loves being outdoors and exploring: She recently hiked into the caves of Mount Timpanogos in Utah. She explores imaginary worlds through reading, a favorite adventure was into the world of Harry Potter. In fact, her love of Harry Potter connected her to Miss Utah, who inspired Mackenzie to compete in the teen program. Maybe being involved in MAO will someday connect her with her favorite Formula 1 team, Scuderia Ferrari. |
