GreenSprouts: Inspiring Youth to Lead Environmental Change

At Large Title
Melissa Tallman is a passionate advocate for environmental education, food justice, and community empowerment. As Miss Itasca 2025, she leads Green Sprouts, a service initiative that equips young people with tools to restore native ecosystems and grow their own food through community gardens and hands-on learning experiences.

Melissa holds an associate degree in Criminal Justice Studies from Minneapolis Community and Technical College, a bachelor’s degree in Criminology and Criminal Justice from Hamline University, and a vocational degree in Culinary Arts. Her unique background allows her to connect issues of public safety, equity, and food access—recognizing that nurturing both land and community go hand in hand.

She serves as Vice President of the Hamline Midway Coalition board and is a certified Master Gardener with Ramsey County. Whether she’s planting trees, leading garden workshops, or mentoring young changemakers, Melissa brings heart, knowledge, and purpose to everything she does—cultivating a more sustainable and inclusive future for Minnesota.
