I am, Kaitlin Korin Wake, Miss Moorhead’s Outstanding Teen 2018. I am 16 years old and a sophomore at Frazee High School. I love being a member of what my family lovingly dubs the “Fab Five;" I am the second oldest. My brother Charlton is a Freshman at the University of Minnesota Twin Cities, sister McKenzie is a 7th grader, Emersyn a 4th grader, and my youngest brother Creighton a 2nd grader.
I am very involved in dance; a founding member of the Northern Lights Dance Academy. I have been dancing there for 12 years. I have taken Tap, Hip Hop, and Jazz but my favorite is Ballet and Pointe. I am a member of the Senior Elite Competition team.
At the studio I have competed for the last 6 years as a solo artist at both the local and national levels. I have recorded many of the studio’s “firsts” including the first individual solo, first individual platinum and the first to place in the top 20 at nationals, receiving numerous individual awards at both the local and national levels and have been consistently one of the top scoring soloists at the studio.
My dance involvement carries over at school as a member of the Frazee Fly Girls, making the varsity jazz team as a 7th grader. I have helped lead the team to a State Championship in 2016 and Runner-Up in 2017. The 2016 team was the first female team in Frazee High School history to win a state tournament. I have also been a member of the varsity high kick team since 7th grade. The team was State Runner Up in 2016.
I am one of only three girls on the Frazee Trap team and it was joining this team that helped me find my platform “Dream without Limits, Live without Fear.” While most of the school view me as a dancer and a "girly girl," one of my true passions is hunting. Frazee has a history of having a strong Trap team but the thought of joining the team required me to step outside of other people’s opinion of me. For the first time ever I have had to face fears and do something “outside the box.” Luckily I had a close friend who would not let fear hold me back. While a few of the boys couldn’t believe this pointe shoe wearing princess could even hold a gun, I has proven I can hold my own.
In Trap I found a new group of friends, and a support system, I didn’t even know existed. These people, without knowing it, helped me to find my true inner spirit, and allowed people to see me as something other than a dancer. They have become my family and my "brothers." I have found a new strength and joy and realized that being true to yourself is the most important thin; All in something that I almost didn’t do because of my fear and allowing people to tell me who I should be.
Now I realize what I could have missed out on if I would have not taken a chance, and so, “Dream without Limits, Live without Fear” was born. I wants to encourage young people to take chances and risks, to live those big dreams. As the current Miss America Cara Mund has said “If you can Dream it, you can become it...you are the only one that can really stand in your way. I wasn't limited by anyone but myself." My hope is to inspire young people to take chances through the sharing of stories of people who have done so and eventually a mentorship program to give young people the strength and encouragement to live their dreams.
At Frazee High School I have participated in Cross Country, Volleyball, Track and Knowledge Bowl. My long term goals include becoming an Early Childhood Teacher, and if given the opportunity, to teach dance. I am so excited to use my year to serve the people of Moorhead and the greater community and to become involved with the Children’s Miracle Network, working with one of my greatest passions, young people. I hope that I can make a difference in just one young person’s life by encouraging them to reach for the stars
