Kate Smith is the daughter of Allen and Kirsten Smith of Baxter, Minnesota. She was crowned Miss Central Lakes on November 5, 2016 and will be representing the Brainerd Lakes area at the Miss Minnesota pageant in June 2017. Kate has 3 siblings and 5 nieces and nephews who keep her on her toes.
Kate is currently attending St. Cloud State University studying mass communications and sports broadcasting. She is a member of the Delta Zeta sisterhood and a SCSU Pan-Hellenic Delegate. Her love for Cheerleading has led her to the Husky competitive cheer squad, with whom she traveled to Orlando Florida last year for the UCA Finals in which they debuted at 12th! Go Huskies!
Kate's personal platform, "Consent is clear, if it’s not yes, it’s no!" is inspired by her personal story. She has a passion to speak out and help teens discuss sexual boundaries and develop an open dialogue about sexual assault. She is active in "Take Back the Night" festivities and volunteers at sexual assault centers. Kate also has a passion to provide area emergency rooms with blankets and incidentals for victims.
Some interesting facts about Kate are that when she was 11 years old she survived a life-threatening surgical mistake. She graduated from Brainerd High School with 9 varsity letters, among academic accolades. She is a black belt in tae kwon do, has been a soccer referee, coaches cheerleading at Brainerd High School, coaches soccer for Lakes Area Youth Soccer Association, and loves to be active.
